Low Vitamin D Levels Linked to Alzheimer’s

Monday, October 5th, 2009

The importance of vitamin D for a healthy body is well known, but health experts have been in the news raising a hue and cry about a vitamin D deficiency crisis in this country .

Apparently we’re just not getting enough vitamin D in our bodies, and many people are wondering if the warnings of staying out of the sun and tanning booths are starting to swing this health pendulum too far the other way.

One of the most vital roles of vitamin D is to boost the absorption of calcium into the bones. Vitamin D also helps to keep teeth and gums healthy, especially in older adults.

The latest vitamin D study comes to us through the combined efforts of the Peninsula Medical School, the University of Cambridge, and the University of Michigan. They have shown that vitamin D may also help maintain cognitive skills. While not comprehensive, the study was based on information collected from almost 2,000 adults aged 65 and over who participated in a large health survey in England. The data shows that as vitamin D levels decreased, cognitive impairment increased.

Of the cognitive impairment diseases, Alzheimer’s is the most common form. It is an incurable, degenerative and terminal disease that was first discovered by German psychiatrist Alois Alzheimer in 1906. It is usually found in people 65 and older, although it can sometimes occur earlier.

According to the study, a contributing factor to injuries in Alzheimer’s patients could be a lack of vitamin D. Vitamin D is important for the strength and development of bones, but since many Alzheimer’s patients are homebound or lacking mobility, they are frequently lacking sunlight.

People with Alzheimer’s also have an increased risk of hip and other bone fractures as a result. As Alzheimer’s disease is more prevalent in older populations, the ability of skin to convert vitamin D to its active form decreases with age, contributing to increased risk. One study of women with Alzheimer’s done by the Medical College of Wisconsin found that decreased bone mineral density was associated with a low intake of vitamin D and inadequate sunlight exposure.

There was also evidence linking a lack of vitamin D to Parkinson’s Disease, another disease associated with the aged, but there is still much study and testing to do to determine whether low vitamin D levels are linked to cognitive impairments such as Alzheimer’s.

Older adults should boost their vitamin D intake to help reduce chronic pain and strengthen their teeth and bones; younger adults should also boost their vitamin D intake to help reduce the risk of weakened bones, bone fractures, cognitive impairment, and even some forms of cancer.

Experts recommend that we get about 15 minutes of sun per day, or barring that, spending time in an indoor tanning bed.

All of this raises the question of whether tanning beds can offer the same health benefits as sunshine. The best source of Vitamin D is the sun, however tanning beds provide a good source of Vitamin D. Tanning beds are installed with bulbs that emit mostly UVA (long-wave) rays, said to be less harmful than UVB (short-wave) rays. Thus, a tanning bed gives customers the same emission as the sun, but at a more controlled level and shorter time.

Tanning beds, while not as powerful nor more popular than sunlight, still provides beneficial results in a safer environment, especially when the weather is too cold to be out in the sun.

The theme of the show this year is “Smart Tan Downtown: Driving the 2010 Tanning Boom.” Smart Tan plans to roll out a massive program to expedite the coming boom in indoor tanning, a program intended to empower everyone in the tanning industry community to take part in a UV revolution. Smart Tan believes everyone in the industry – from salon employees, owners and managers to manufacturers and suppliers – can play a role in promoting the fact that tanning is natural and intended, raising the industry’s commitment to vitamin D research and awareness programs and promote the overall pro-sun message.

etsspapicWalk into virtually any modern tanning salon today and you’ll find more than just tanning beds. That’s because a trend started a couple of years back. Customers started looking for more than just tanning. And salons, quick to act and appease, started offering the services their clients were asking for: sunless booths, airbrush tanning, light therapy sessions, teeth whitening and touchless massage.

tanning salons have become much more sophisticated and customer-centric as their customers have demanded more high-end services and prices they can afford. Salon owners want their customers to look and feel their best at the best prices possible. They also want to provide convenient services to meet their customers’ tight schedules. The more services someone can fit into a 20-minute time frame, the better.

ETS Tan saw this trend happening and leads the tanning industry in empowering salon owners by offering the best beauty equipment and services possible.

First, with the creation and debut of the Rejuvasun spa bed, ETS Tan delivered affordable light therapy for the face and neck areas for salon owners to provide to their customers. Today, thanks to a partnership with the international company that manufactures light therapy equipment for dermatologists use, the Rejuvasun with Omnilux gives salon owners the opportunity to offer their customers FDA-cleared, medically proven technology that reduces fine lines and wrinkles up to 74 percent, tightens loose skin, stimulates the production of collagen and gives facial and neck skin a more youthful appearance.
ETS Tan is today a nationwide distributor of two revolutionary health and beauty products, the Hydromassage and the ShineWhite Rocket.
The Hydromassage is a touchless massage system that features a traveling jet system to deliver a full-body massage in just 10 minutes. Users remain fully clothed to experience the massage, adjust the bed’s pressure ranges and utilize a touch screen to watch updates on lotion specials and other salon services.  Clients can also watch videos or listen to music during their session. Sessions are extremely affordable at tanning salons compared to the prices of touch massages at high-end day spas.
And the ShineWhite Rocket is an FDA-approved teeth-whitening system that is clinically proven to dramatically whiten both upper and lower teeth in just one 20-minute session at a price much cheaper than a dentist would charge.
Before today’s economy redefined their discretionary income, people paid big bucks for beauty treatments like light therapy, massage and teeth whitening. And when tanning salons were “seasonal,” when the sun came out their customers disappeared. But shrewd salon owners have added products like ETS Tan’s Rejuvasun with Omnilux, the Hydromassage and the ShineWhite Rocket and they’re no longer experiencing an off season, which means they’re adding to their bottom line, increasing their annual income, growing and thriving.

The History of ETS

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

Born on a small Indiana farm and grown into an industry leader with international reach, ETS Tan this year reaches perhaps its most significant milestone ever.

ETS Tan celebrates 25 years of providing superior indoor tanning beds, tanning equipment and supplies, unmatched customer support and an unwavering commitment to consumers who use its products and tanning salon owners who decide to offer ETS equipment to their clients.

The humble beginnings of the world’s largest manufacturer of tanning beds, tanning equipment and supplies is interesting.

Indoor tanning was a rather new and uncharted industry when Trevor and Edna Gray were exploring new business opportunities back in 1984. From their small Indiana farm, the Grays incorporated European Tanning Systems Inc. and became a distributor of what were then called sun beds and related tanning products. What made the couple successful was their clear focus on providing highly personalized service to clients. Their business quickly grew to the point that the Grays needed to hire a staff and spread their wings from existing as a regional distributor of tanning beds to a national one.

After just four years in business, ETS relocated from its rural roots to a business park in Indianapolis where its main distribution center employed 80. Regional sales and distribution facilities were soon opened in Florida and California. Explosive growth in another four years of time then prompted another physical move for ETS to an 88,000-square-foot office and warehouse facility. Quickly, another 76,000 square feet of operating space was added and ETS joined sister companies Australian Gold, Swedish Beauty and Helios under one roof. An 8,000-square-foot showroom displayed ETS’s complete tanning bed line and products produced by its sister companies and offices housed ETS’s sales, customer service and support personnel.

Today, ETS Tan is headquartered on the south side of Indianapolis in a massive 365,000 square-foot warehouse and distribution center ideally located off Interstate 65 and just 15 minutes from the new Indianapolis International Airport, a convenience for prospective tanning salon owners considering ETS as their preferred tanning equipment supplier. A 5,000-square-foot showroom overlooks the factory’s assembly lines. ETS also has its own tanning salon, offering employees the chance to experience soothing sessions during their breaks. Australian Gold and Helios are located in a separate business park on the city’s westside.
